Wetangula’s FORD-KENYA Takes Lead In Bungoma County
As former allies were defeated in Tuesday’s general elections, Senator Moses Wetangula’s FORD-Kenya candidate has gained ground in Bungoma.
The candidates that sought to unseat Wetangula as the FORD-Kenya party leader, Governor Wangamati, DAP-K leader Wafula Wamunyinyi, and Dr. Eseli Simiyu, have lost in the polls.
“I told you that those coup plotters won’t push me from FORD-Kenya, I promised them that they must be defeated in these elections which has happened, their coup died on arrival,” Wetangula said.
Now that the Governor, Woman MP, Senator, and three MPs have won their elections and been recognized as victorious by the IEBC, Bungoma County is a Ford Kenya stronghold.
John Makali of FORD-Kenya received 32,099 votes in the Kanduyi constituency, beating his close challenger Wafula Wamunyinyi of DAP-K, who received 20,240. Former MP Alfred Khang’ati received 12,970 votes for the ODM party.
Martin Wanyonyi of the FORD-Kenya party won Webuye East with 12,864, followed by Wanjala Iyaya of the DAP-K party with 5,383, Caro Buyela of the Jubilee party with 4,680, Aggrey Namisi of the ODM with 4,548, and John Chelongo of the UDP with 1,801.
However, in the fiercely contested Kabuchai constituency, Majimbo Kalasinga of FORD-Kenya won with 37,627 votes, closely followed by Evans Kakai of the Jubilee Party and Erick Wanyonyi of the DAP-K with 2,014 votes.
Murumba Chikati, a UDA candidate, easily defeated former FORD-Kenya Secretary General Eseli Simiyu in the Tongaren Constituency.
Senator Wetangula expressed his satisfaction with the results to the media on Thursday at the Kanduyi constituency tallying center. He added that Kenya Kwanza had run sufficient campaigns to ensure that the results were in line with the agreement that Bungoma would give the coalition 70% of the vote.
“I think what we agreed with William Ruto is that we deliver 70 percent to the coalition and indeed we have managed to do so,” Wetangula said.
Wetang’ula lauded Bungoma residents for believing in him and honouring his call to vote for the Kenya Kwanza aspirants in Tuesday’s election.
“I want to say a big thank you to you as my soul supporters for ensuring that you vote for our Kenya Kwanza candidates,” he said…
Wetang’ula, however, sent his best wishes to departing officials, including Dr. Eseli Simiyu, the former secretary general of Ford Kenya, outgoing Bungoma governor Wycliffe Wangamati, and DAP-K party head Wafula Wamunyinyi.
At the time of publication, the results for the Woman Rep and Governor positions had not yet been made public.
