Wafula Chebukati States That IEBC Officials Have Been Arrested, Abducted And Others Injured During The Election Period
Chairman of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), Wafula Chebukati, has disclosed that throughout the tallying of election results, officials had to deal with intimidation, arrests, kidnappings, and attacks.
On Monday, August 15, Chebukati revealed the information before announcing William Ruto as the next president of Kenya at the Bomas.
The chair reported that a fight broke out at Bomas, injuring two commissioners, Professor Abdi Yakub Guliye, Boya Molu, and IEBC CEO Marjan Hussein Marjan.
When the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya alliance accused the IEBC of electoral fraud, there was a ruckus at the national tallying center.
Saitabao Ole Kanchory, the party’s top agent, charged some commission members of violating electoral laws.
“We have intelligence reports that their system was penetrated and hacked and that some of the IEBC officials actually committed electoral offences and some of them ought to have been arrested if they were not arrested,” stated Kanchory.
Four additional IEBC commissioners conducted a surprise press conference at the Serena Hotel as the commotion at Bomas reached a fever pitch, during which they declared that they would not accept responsibility for the results that Chairman Chebukati would announce.
The commissioners, led by vice-chair Juliana Cherera, along with Francis Wanderi, Irene Masit, and Justus Nyang’aya, said that the results were reached in a secretive manner but did not provide any further information.
“We are not at Bomas because we cannot take ownership of the results that are going to be announced,” Cherera said.
