US Government Gives Kenya Ksh.16B Food Assistance
The US government has contributed at least 16 billion shillings to Kenya’s drought relief operations.
According to the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), the funds will assist meet the immediate needs of approximately 1.3 million Kenyans.
The extra food aid for Kenya comes amid an ongoing drought that has left more than four million people in the grip of a severe hunger crisis, with the figure expected to increase to more than five million by June of this year.
Following the fifth failed rainy season in the Horn of Africa, cumulative rainfall in Kenya is now less than 70% of the 30-year average across the majority of the nation, exacerbating humanitarian requirements.
For families residing in regions where local markets are closed, USAID will provide emergency food items such as sorghum, maize, yellow split peas, and vegetable oil.
