Strike To Wanjigi As Court Deny His Presidential Bid
Jimi Wanjigi, a presidential candidate for the Safina Party, filed a petition with the High Court asking for his name to be added to the list of contenders for the August 9th general election.
Justice Jairus Ngaah dismissed the petition on the grounds that Wanjigi had failed to persuade the court of his eligibility to run for office.
Following the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission’s (IEBC) rejection of Wanjigi’s bid to be permitted to run for president in August due to his lack of a university degree, Wanjigi filed the petition.
He asked the court to overturn the IEBC’s decision and direct Wafula Chebukati, the board’s chairman, to nominate him for president.
Wanjigi claims that the IEBC Disputes Resolution Committee erred by denying his complaint.
“An order of Mandamus directing Chebukati to include the name of Jimi Wanjigi in the ballot papers for presidential elections scheduled to be held on August 9th,” Wanjigi’s petition seeks in part.
After Chebukati refused to give Wanjigi the go-ahead to participate in the elections in August, Wanjigi accused him of seriously harming him and his campaign.
Wanjigi alleged that it was odd how his name was removed from the list of presidential candidates.
