SRC Abolishes Sitting Allowances And Car Grants For MPs
In the present, Members of Parliament are no longer eligible for sitting expenses, automobile grants, or travel expenses from the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC).
The SRC Chairperson Lyn Mengich on Thursday launched a new examination of the pay and perks for State servants.
But according to Ms. Mengich, the gross pay has remained the same even after the recent evaluation of the payment structures for MPs and other State authorities.
“The consolidated salary has been deconsolidated and itemized into the basic structure, house allowance, commuter allowance, and salary market adjustment,” Ms. Mengich stated.
The SRC boss further noted that the move was arrived at following consideration of such factors as job evaluation, salary surveys, economic outlook, deconsolidation of pay, as well as stakeholder engagement.
“The commission undertook job evaluation across the public service to determine the relative worth of jobs and to harmonize job grades within and across sectors to ensure equity and fairness in salary structures,” said Ms. Mengich.
“The commission carried out salary surveys covering international benchmarks, and private and public sector salary surveys. These provided market data, which will inform the salary structures in the last phase of this cycle.”
She added: “The review took into account Kenya’s economic performance for the financial years 2020/2021-2021/2022, as well as affordability and fiscal sustainability.”
Ms. Mengich further mentioned that the commission considered a 2019 ruling by the Employment and Labour Relations court calling for the deconsolidation of the compensation for State officers in addition to reviewing consultative public interactions with the public.
