Salt Bae Barred From Opencup Finals 2023
Turkish chef Nusret Gökçe, also known as Salt Bae, has been barred from competing in the US Open Cup, the country’s oldest and most prestigious soccer tournament.
The ban was imposed after the celebrity chef interrupted Argentina’s victory celebrations by entering the pitch while the Men in Blue and White were celebrating with their families.
The ban was imposed not because he entered the pitch, but because of what he did after entering the pitch, which has landed him in hot water not only with the US Open Cup, but also with FIFA.
Nusret not only touched, but also hugged and kissed the World Cup trophy, breaking FIFA’s golden rule.
The trophy can only be touched and held by World Cup winners and heads of state, according to FIFA rules.
FIFA is currently investigating how the celebrity chef and several others gained “undue access” to the pitch at the conclusion of the World Cup final in Qatar.
In a statement to BBC Sport, a FIFA spokesperson said: “Following a review, FIFA has been establishing how individuals gained undue access to the pitch after the closing ceremony at Lusail stadium on 18 December.
“The appropriate internal action will be taken.”
The celebrity chef was spotted on the field after Argentina defeated France in a penalty shootout to win the World Cup for the first time since Madonna did so in 1986.
He posed with Argentina players, bit into a medal, held and kissed the World Cup trophy.
Following this, the US Open Cup announced in a tweet that the celebrity chef would be barred from attending the showpiece event in 2023.
“Salt Bae is hereby barred from the 2023 @opencup Final,” the US Open Cup announced on Twitter.
The 39-year-old chef not only touched the coveted trophy, but also pestered Lionel Messi for a photo.
While the Argentine captain initially ignored him, Salt Bae persisted in pestering him for a photo.
