Raphael Tuju Claims Chebukati Met UDA Officials Before Announcing Results
Raphael Tuju, the executive director of Azimio la Umoja, now asserts that on the morning of August 15, 2022, a team of Kenya Kwanza leaders met with the IEBC top brass, led by chairman Wafula Chebukati, only moments after they had met with a delegation of Azimio la Umoja Coalition leaders.
On Sunday, Tuju reacted via televised remarks to the IEBC Chairperson’s affidavit, which claimed a meeting took place early in the morning on the day he was supposed to deliver the presidential results.
When Tuju learned that some forms were being loaded onto the IEBC portal while others were being deleted, he allegedly paid an unscheduled visit to Bomas on that fateful day.
Veronica Maina, the secretary general of the UDA, and Josephat Nanok, the director of William Ruto’s presidential campaign, are alleged to have been waiting for a meeting with Chebukati on the aforementioned day as the man was ready to leave.
“As we were meeting the IEBC official that morning, the IEBC official Guliye left the meeting for a washroom with a phone. He spent a long time there and after we were leaving after the meeting, we found Veronica and Nanok at the door step,” Tuju said on Sunday.
Tuju now demands that Chebukati tell Kenyans the truth about the purported meeting with UDA representatives.
The timing of Tuju’s news appearance coincides with Chebukati’s allegations that a Tuju-led delegation attempted to convince him to distort the results in favor of one of the two front-runners for president, ostensibly to prevent a crisis.
He further said that the Tuju-led team had offered him a large reward for his trouble, which he claims he rejected because the government already paid him well to carry out his duties.
“…at about 3am on the morning of 15th August, 2022, I was visited by Raphael Tuju, Senator Amos Wako and Advocate Kyalo Mbobu. They indicated that they had made several attempts to see me to discuss the tallying and results. I told them that I could only meet them in the presence of all Commissioners,” read Chebukati’s affidavit.
