Public Toilet Operators To Entertain Their Customers With Music As They Poop
In Nairobi, several owners of public restrooms have made the decision to improve the visitor experience by playing music in their establishments.
There are 18 public restrooms in the Nairobi Central Business District (CBD), but one in particular, on Tom Mboya Street, has been playing music for visitors.
Several speakers that are most likely attached somewhere on the ceiling are playing music. It’s a good song.
The job of “a DJ” is being played by an attendant, who can be seen mixing various genres of music based on the occasion, the crowd, and of course the playlist.
“This is a treat we give to our customers… and we have been playing music in our toilet for some time now…” Elizabeth Njeri, a customer attendant told Wananchi Reporting.
“People love music, and we believe playing different types of music could help to release stress,” added Njeri.
Asked if they play music all the time, Njeri says: “No, not all the time. I would say mostly in the evenings, weekdays especially, when we have many customers.”
One client who spoke with Wananchi agreed that the music is a welcome addition and helps to liven up the atmosphere.
Njeri observes that likely only their facility plays music to amuse visitors and brighten their spirits as they conduct business.
The building was among those in the CBD that Nairobi Metropolitan Services (NMS) closed for “security reasons” sometime in March 2021.
Later, they were opened, and they are now completely functional.
There are about 60 public restrooms in Nairobi County, 18 of which are in the central business district, notably at bus stops, parks for recreation, railroad stations, and markets.
The restrooms in Nairobi are thought to be a significant source of income because they cost Ksh10 every visit.
