At the Azimio La Umoja One Kenya event in Kisii, which was attended by the candidate’s running partner Martha Karua, a police officer was detained on Thursday and is anticipated to be charged on Friday.
On Thursday night, the officer was taken to the Kisumu Central Police Station cells, according to Nyanza Regional Police Boss Karanja Muiruri.
The officer identified as Josephat Makori was off-duty and had not been used at the event, according to the police chief.
“Josephat Makori of Kisii Police Station was at the scene in civilian clothes and was not deployed there, is the one who dropped the teargas canister. This was witnessed by members of the public who beat him up accusing him of why he was spoiling their meeting. He was rescued by fellow police officers,” said police.
According to Karanja, the officer stationed at the Kisii Central police station has a direct connection to the incident that resulted in the disruption of the gathering and the escorting of the leaders out of the Gusii stadium for their own safety.
According to Karanja, who was speaking to Ramogi TV, the officer will also be subject to internal disciplinary action in accordance with National Police Service policies.
The investigation into who else the police may have teamed up with to make the commotion is still ongoing, according to DCI officers.
