Peter Munya Wants Kenyans To Stop Eating Ugali And Here Is Why.
Peter Munya, the cabinet secretary in charge of agriculture, has urged Kenyans to embrace other cuisines rather than the country’s traditional mainstay, ugali.
At the Namanga border, Munya stated that the government would publish an order reducing the cost of maize flour by Sh2. The CS halted all tariffs on imported maize the day before to this.
“Kenyans should embrace other foods. Maize was brought by our colonisers; we cannot rely on it and forget what our forefathers fed on like sorghum and cassava,” Munya said.
“We have decided to suspend all levies imposed on imported maize by 90 days that is coming to Kenya from any border post and from July 1, no charges will be levied on maize,” he said.
Since a few weeks ago, the price of maize flour has doubled, making it difficult for many Kenyans to put ugali on their tables. Currently, a 2 kilogram packet of maize flour costs Sh208.
Many Kenyan households have had to stretch their budgets further in order to buy necessities due to the country’s skyrocketing cost of living.
However, President Uhuru Kenyatta advised legislators to stop blaming him for the high cost of living during the Labor Day celebrations, claiming that it was a problem “beyond his control.” His comments attracted mixed reactions.
