One Week Old Baby Abandoned In A Classroom In Tharaka Nithi County
In the classroom of Chogoria, Tharaka Nithi County’s Kairuni Primary School, a one-week-old newborn girl was discovered abandoned.
On August 20, around 10 p.m., one of the school’s security officers discovered the infant alive.
Mr. Mutembei Kirauni, a village elder, claimed that the youngster was discovered on one of the desks.
“I received a call at around 10pm from the school chairman informing me that a child had been found abandoned inside one of the classrooms. I then rushed to the school,” said Mr. Kirauni.
“Indeed, I arrived at the school and found the child with the watchman. So, I called my wife and we agreed to bring the child into our home for the night,” said Mr. Kirauni.
Pamela Mutembei, Kirauni’s wife, said they took good care of the youngster all night long when asked about the incident.
“It’s a baby girl, I would say around one week old because the umbilical cord is still nipped with a peg. The child looks very healthy, and beautiful,” noted Mrs. Mutembei .
“The child slept well, save for one moment around dawn when she woke up to suckle, so I gave her milk which my husband had bought – and she went back to sleep,” she added.
“I am pleading with the mother of this child to come and take this innocent child home. As a mother, you know that it is you that the child needs most, now. This child needs to suckle, and she can only suckle the mother. I beg you to come and take her home. This child does not deserve to suffer,” pleaded Mrs. Mutembe.
Area Chief Mr. George Mutembei has pleaded with the mother of the child to come out and take the baby home.
“Please, if this is your child, I humbly ask you to come for it. Do not do this to the innocent child, come for your child and take care of it.”
“Meanwhile, we are headed to Chogoria police station to record a statement, after which I will call the child welfare society officer in Tharaka Nithi County to make a report and seek advice on how to proceed with this matter.”
“It is not easy to take care of a child especially of this age, and so I thank the village manager and his wife, and the security guard for all their efforts,” said the chief.
In several districts of Kenya, the number of incidents of abandoned children has increased over the past few months.
