Omanyala Misses Chance To Shine As Team Kenya Disqualified In The Finals
Due to team Kenya’s disqualification from the event, Kenyan sprint star Ferdinand Omanyala lost out on a chance to shine at the 4×100 meter relay finals of the current Commonwealth Games being held in Birmingham, United Kingdom.
Before Omanyala, who was awaiting to race to the finish line, could catch the baton, one of the athletes dropped it, eliminating Kenya from contention. Omanyala lost the opportunity to shine as a result, as Team Kenya was disqualified and Team England went on to win the race in 38.35 seconds.
With a season-best time of 38.70, Trinidad and Tobago won silver, and Nigeria completed the top three with a time of 38.81sS.
The African sprinting sensation, in fine form on Saturday, helped propel Kenya’s 4X100m relay team into the finals at the commonwealth games in Birmingham
Omanyala was given the button since Kenya trailed at position 4 and had little chance of qualifying for the finals. The Commonwealth 100m Champion, however, was the game-changer as he easily defeated his rivals to provide Kenya a spot in the finals and finish second behind team Nigeria.
The fastest man in Africa is in fine form after winning gold for Kenya in the 100-meter event and reclaiming a title that had been lost for 60 years.
With several races scheduled for later in the day, Kenya will be vying for medals. The women’s 1,500-meter final is at 9:30 p.m., the men’s 800-meter final is at 9:35 p.m., the men’s javelin throw final is at 9:40 p.m., the women’s 5,000-meter final is at 9:45 p.m., and the men’s 4 x 400-meter relay final is at 10:30 p.m.
Overall, the competition has brought both good news and disappointment to professional athletes, with Kenya now holding the 12th place finish with four gold, five silver, and seven bronze medals.
With a total of 26 medals, South Africa tops the list of African nations, followed by Kenya.
