No Condoms For Teenagers, Let Them Abstain; Susan Nakhumicha, Health CS Says
Susan Nakhumicha, Cabinet Secretary for Health, has stated that she will not provide condoms to teenage Kenyans.
Speaking on the sidelines of the ongoing African Union Summit 2023 in Addis Abeba, Ethiopia, in a video uploaded by Nation on Sunday, the CS noted that as a Christian lady, she advocates abstinence as a preventative strategy against STDs and young pregnancies.
“I am Mama Kanisa (a church woman), therefore number one is abstinence; that we teach our youth, our adolescents to abstain,” she said.
However Citizens didn’t take that so well. The statement sounded reckless and here are some of the reactions from people
If she thinks this is like her generation when she was growing up then she is wrong ,this is a totally different generation ,things have changed ,I do community service and we talk to as young as 11 years moms ,she is talking about teens ?the best way to protect this generation is to advocate for protection as we also advocate for abstinence which clearly is not working ,but well ..
You can’t consider pregnancies over chronic illness like HIV, ofcourse nobody is going to abstain, provide solutions not the so Christian that you are saying, education and providing pretty of family planning methods especially condoms will save alot of teens
We all want them(teenagers) to abstain🗣But we know they wont…so Let them be EMPOWERED with information and choices( condoms) fall in this category….This too much religion is going to throw us in a bad place….We were blessed with brain and healthy interventions….Let’s use that mama kanisa….shall we?
