Man Wakes Up From Grave After Being Buried Alive As Sacrifice In South America
After embarking on a drinking binge, a 30-year-old man has come forward to explain how he ended up being buried alive in a coffin.
Victor Hugo Mica Alvarez claims to have crawled out of a coffin 80 kilometers from the location of his blackout during a drinking binge in Bolivia, South America.
In homage to Pachamama, the deity of the ground and fertility, Alvarez had attended the Mother Earth festival in El Alto the previous evening and indulged in large amounts of alcohol.
Participants in the festival are said to be making “sullu” sacrifices to the environment, according to local media.
Alvarez believes he was elected as one of this year’s contributions by the drunk locals, who buried him alive as a gift to Pachamama on August 6.
“Last night was the pre-entry [of the festival], we went dancing. And afterwards I don’t remember. The only thing I remember is that I thought I was in my bed, I wanted to get up to go urinate and I couldn’t move,” he narrated the ordeal to journalists.
“When I pushed the coffin, I was able to break a glass that it had and that way I was able to get out.I barely broke the glass and, through the glass, dirt began to enter. They wanted to use me as a sullu.”
He said, “I broke the glass, my whole hand was damaged, I barely got out, but I went to the police and they thought I was intoxicated,” as he described how he managed to force himself out of the pit against the building mud.
“They assured me that you would arrive in good health.”
According to ancient Bolivian customs, Pachamama “opens her mouth” for sacrifices in August.
The goddess receives presents from festival goers including animals, sheep fetuses, cocoa leaves, and vibrant candies.
