Lee Njiru Launches His Memoir “President’s Pressman”
President’s Pressman, the memoir by the former State House press secretary Lee Njiru, was formally released on Monday.
Njiru gave an exciting address at the Nakuru event in support of the book, praising it as a true depiction of State House operations that dispels the myths and societal expectations attached to it.
Njiru expressed his hope that the book will serve as a warning to the “perpetrators of evil” and a benchmark for the kind of leadership that public workers provide to the public when held accountable.
“This book advises the ordinary citizen not to be deceived by the outward glitter and magnificence of palaces. Behind those facades of glory, there are numerous cases of sordid affairs that are unknown to the outside world,” said the 73-year-old as quoted by Daily Nation.
“I want this book to caution the perpetrators of evil that one day, they will be forced to account. As public servants, history will interrogate, investigate and reveal our deeds, whether heroic and public-spirited or evil. The choice is ours.”
He further called on leaders in the political front to keep the peace in the run-up to the August general election, which is just 8 days away, and tone down incitements that might spark off violence.
“I urge politicians to create an atmosphere that will not force Kenyans to flee from their beautiful country. Don’t make elections a matter of life and death. Allow our old men and women to enjoy their sunset years,” said Njiru.
“Give our children and grandchildren and atmosphere to enjoy their youth and develop their God-given talents.”
Two of Njiru’s daughters, Ms. Grace Wanja and Dr. Irene Waruguru, spoke on behalf of his family and praised their father for the memoir as they reflected on his final years of duty under the late President Moi’s administration.
“It’s a story of tribulations and frustrations visited upon my father as the person who persecuted him was recruited and trained by my father. God is great dad came out victorious. My father is a fighter and resilient,” said Dr. Waruguru.
Former coworkers, politicians, the managing director of the Kenya Literature Bureau, Victor Lomaria, and other influential people attended the ceremony.
