KUPPET Hits Out On Magoha For His Indecisiveness On School Opening
In light of the potential publication of the presidential election results, the Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) has questioned if the Ministry of Education intends to carry out a new instruction for schools to resume operations the next week.
This comes after George Magoha, the cabinet secretary for education, moved the resumption of schools from the previously announced Monday to Thursday, August 18, 2022, on Saturday.
Magoha said that the adjustments had been made as a result of a delay in the counting of the votes.
Teachers, students, parents, and other stakeholders, according to KUPPET, are uncertain about whether the ministry will uphold its order given that the reopening date has changed twice in the past week and may change again if the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) experiences additional delays in announcing the results.
After ordering an immediate school shutdown in a statement on August 1st, Magoha, who had previously stated that schools will return on August 15 on July 31st, revised the date to August 11.
“The decision was universally condemned by all education stakeholders, none of which was consulted in its making,” said KUPPET Secretary General Akelo Misori in a statement to newsrooms.
“Given the unpredictability of the changes, there is uncertainty whether the Minister will adhere to the new date, since the election programme is still unfolding.”
According to KUPPET, the uncertainty surrounding the reopening of schools is making it difficult for schools to make plans based on the latest announcement.
“This is a sad state of affairs, given the immense financial and logistical factors involved in the re-opening of schools. To remedy the situation, the Minister must issue a statement on the comprehensive term dates for schools for the rest of the year,” said KUPPET.
