IEBC’s IT Experts Detained At JKIA Summoned By Anti-Terrorism Police Unit
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) and the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) have disagreements on the seizure of electronic voting equipment and the detention of three officials.
Wafula Chebukati, the chairman of the IEBC, issued a statement on Friday evening denouncing what he called the “harassment” of agency employees.
He asserted that the polling materials had not been released as had been claimed and that the agency’s executives had been released on condition.
“They (officials) have to appear before the OCS Anti-Terrorism Police Unit, with the implication that the commission is now not able to prepare for the elections,” Chebukati said.
He went on to add that despite what the police department claimed, the stickers that had been seized had not been released.
The DCI, however, quickly responded by denying the IEBC’s claim in a series of tweets.
The OCS Anti-Terrorism Police Unit, according to the statement, does not exist.
“‘OCS Anti Terrorism Police Unit’ in our structure. The statement issued by the IEBC Chairman is not only inaccurate, but also misleading to the public and should be treated with the contempt it deserves,” the DCI said in a tweet.
It said it will release a comprehensive statement on Saturday.
