IEBC stops Rongai MP Elections After A Mix Up Of Ballot Papers
Following a mix-up with the ballot papers, the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has postponed the Parliamentary elections for the Rongai Constituency in Nakuru County.
Manager of Nakuru County IEBC Joseph Mele announced the suspension on Tuesday morning.
For the MP seat, ballot boxes and papers were missing from the voting location at Mercy Njeri Primary School.
In order to protest the suspension, youth blocked roads and set tires on fire.
Raymond Moi, the incumbent member of parliament for Rongai, criticized the Wafula Chebukati-led electoral commission for the error, calling it a sign of “incompetence” and lack of election preparation.
“The candidates who were vying to be members of parliament for Rongai were not on the ballot papers… This is amazing and incredible because on many occasions, Chebukati has assured Kenyans that he is ready to run these elections but that does not seem to be the case. I am very astonished,” he said.
Mr. Moi was one of the three candidates in the Rongai parliamentary contest.
“If they schedule the elections for another day, the turnout will be low and will will not be on the same playing field… that will affect the outcome,” he added.
