IEBC Reveal Voters Register; Here Are The Counties That Will Determine The Winner Come August
The final voter list, which highlights areas that can be crucial in the 2018 general election, was released by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).
In what appears to be a race that may ultimately be decided by the historical battlegrounds in the northern half of the country and sections of the South Rift, counties in the Mount Kenya region and the Rift valley carry the bulk of the voting population.
The leading presidential contenders have been traveling to various areas in an effort to win over as many people as they can before the election on August 9. The campaigns will try to more specifically target the voters where they are now that the official voter data is available.
The Rift Valley, which has 14 counties, continues to have the most voters overall, with 5.34 million, according to voter information given by the IEBC.
A total of 3.1 million people can vote in Central Kenya, which has five counties, which is equal to the number of voters in the Nyanza area, which has six counties, including Kisii and Nyamira.
With 2.41 million voters, Nairobi County, despite only one unit, comes in second and is one of the most crucial counties for the presidential contest.
The three counties of Ukambani account for 1.69 million of the 1.96 million registered voters in the six coastal counties.
1.59 million voters make up the upper eastern region, which includes the counties of Embu, Marsabit, Isiolo, and the Meru area, with the majority living in the Mount Kenya region.
Garissa, Wajir, and Mandera in the North-Eastern area provide the fewest votes yet might decide the outcome in a close race.
Additional research reveals that the ten counties of the Mt. Kenya region, including the rift valley counties of Laikipia and Nakuru, contribute 5.7 million registered voters. The region has consistently supported Uhuru Kenyatta in general elections, casting an average of 93 percent of its votes for him in the general election of August 2017.
Six Rift Valley counties—Nandi, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo Marakwet, Baringo, Kericho, and Bomet—from both the North and South Rift each contribute 2.2 million votes.
