IEBC Officials Dismissed For Meeting A Candidate At Their Home In Homabay County
Four members of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) were detained on Sunday after visiting a candidate at their home in Ndhiwa, Homa Bay County, according to reports.
Angry neighbors forced the four out of the political candidate’s home and brought them to the police. The four make up the two presiding officers.
The four have already been removed from the roster of IEBC personnel overseeing Tuesday’s elections, according to the Homa Bay County elections manager.
While police look into the purported meeting, the elections body is in the process of replacing them.
The four have been promised by police that they would be charged with violating the Electoral Code of Conduct.
The most recent episode of violence occurred just one day after two governor candidates’ supporters battled during their final concurrent rallies in the county over the weekend.
Three people were hurt in the Saturday melee, which saw Gladys Wanga, an ODM candidate, and Dr. Evans Kidero, an independent candidate, battle even before the two showed up for the rallies.
Additionally, stones were thrown at a number of vehicles.
Moses Lilan, the commissioner for Homa Bay County, stated at the time that authorities were still looking into the event to make sure all responsible parties were brought to justice, but as of Monday morning, no arrests had been made.
