IEBC Did Award Ruto 10,000 Votes In Kiambu Constituency
The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) and the media are at odds over the validity of about 10,000 votes that were allegedly given to William Ruto of Kenya Kwanza in the Kiambu district.
As reported by the media, a Nation journalist had made the mistaken assertion that Ruto had received the 10,000 votes, but IEBC commissioner Justus Nyang’aya rejected the claim, stating that it was untrue.
Who is therefore telling the truth? Mr. Nyang’aya is shown on video from Citizen Digital reading the results and giving Dr. Ruto 10,000 extra votes.
In a previous press conference, Nyang’aya had stated that William Ruto got 51,050 votes in the constituency (as recorded below). He had stated that there were 87 076 registered voters in the constituency, 56 546 valid votes had been cast, and 392 ballots had been rejected.
Raila Odinga received 14,860 votes, William Ruto received 51,050 votes, and Waihiga and Wajackoyah tied for 318th place, according to Mr. Nyang’aya.
Ruto William is 41,050, there is nowhere we added 10,000 to any of the candidates, Mr. Nyang’aya remarked after the mistake was pointed out. I sincerely hope that this is clear and will be fixed.
The commissioner further explained that Raila Odinga’s votes were recorded as 14, 760 in Form B and then changed to 14, 860 in Form C.
However, a spot-check by Citizen Digital showed that indeed the commissioner had announced 10,000 extra votes for William Ruto in the constituency.
After the error was flagged, Mr Nyang’aya returned to the podium and said; “Ruto William is 41,050, there is nowhere we added 10,000 to any of the candidates. I hope this is clear and will be corrected.”
The commissioner further explained that Raila Odinga’s votes were recorded as 14, 760 in Form B and then changed to 14, 860 in Form C.
The commissioner had certainly proclaimed 10,000 more votes for William Ruto in the constituency, according to a spot check by Citizen Digital.
