IEBC Confirms Dates For Mombasa And Kakamega By-Elections
According to the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), by-polls would be held in the areas where the elections were suspended in two weeks.
On August 23, 2022, by-elections will be held in eight electoral regions, according to an IEBC press conference at the Bomas of Kenya. The commission contends that voters should be able to hold elections quickly because by that point, other sections of the nation’s voting systems will have been exhausted.
“The by election will be held in the next two weeks because they deserve a short period to elect their leaders and the commission will be ready to conduct the by elections having dispensed off with other electoral activities relating with the general election. It will also be cost effective as the same equipment and personnel will be deployed with minimum training,” said the IEBC.
Voting in Wajir County, which was postponed due to insecurity, will resume on Wednesday, August 10, at 6AM.
The IEBC also disclosed the total number of votes cast nationwide, stating that as of 4 PM, 12,065,803 ballots had been cast, excluding those from voters who had been verified using the manual register.
The commission promised Kenyans that the presidential tally will be finished by Wednesday night, despite the Wajir delay.
In a previous statement, the IEBC claimed that it had approved the use of manual voter identification at 84 polling places in the Kibwezi West Constituency of Makueni county.
Malava, Matungu, Mumias West, and Mumias East constituencies in Kakamega county had also been given permission to utilize manual voter identification to cast their ballots.
The IEBC stated that it provided a chance for voters to confirm the areas they were voting from and transfer if necessary in respect to people who were not on the voter registers of the regions they turned up on.
