IEBC Claims No Need To Cast A Vote On All The Six Ballot Papers Given
The IEBC has announced that voters won’t be needed to vote for all six elective posts when they show up at their individual polling places with less than 24 hours till the election.
Voters will receive six ballots to mark for the six candidates running for office at the polling places.
The IEBC announced that voters would have the choice to cast their ballots in all of the provided ballot boxes or just the ones they chose during a voter simulation exercise on Sunday.
Gogo Nguma, the elections manager for Nairobi County, said the choice will help prevent a repeat of the 2017 elections, which led to the annulment of results.
Nguma further highlighted that the unmarked ballot papers must be dropped in the corresponding ballot papers “to account for each and every ballot paper.”
“The law does not allow the voter to give us the ballots,” added Nguna clarifying that the ballot papers will not be returned to them.
In 2017, after the Supreme Court heard that many voters only cast ballots for presidential candidates while neglecting other elective positions, the commission was asked to explain where unused ballots were stored.
Deputy Chief Justice Philomena Mwilu presided over the hearing and questioned the commission about where the unmarked ballots were placed and how they were accounted for.
The lawyers’ answer was therefore deemed inadequate by Mwilu after they failed to convince the court with their response.
