IEBC Claims Armed Goons Attack IEBC Officials Preparing Petition Responses
Personnel from the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), who were working on responses to petitions regarding the presidential election that were submitted to the Supreme Court, were almost attacked on Monday night, according to the commission.
The goons who attempted to attack its employees on Monday night were armed with flimsy objects, according to IEBC.
“Today, Monday, 22nd August, 2022 at around 8:30pm an organised group of goons wielding crude weapons attempted to attack IEBC personnel preparing responses to Presidential election petitions at a premise within Nairobi.
However, they were repulsed by Security,” the commission alleged in a tweet on Monday night.
IEBC further called on the Inspector General of Police Hillary Mutyambai to address the issue.
“The Commission condemns this act of hooliganism and intimidation, and calls upon the Inspector of Police (IG) to bring to an end this blatant abuse of the Rule of Law,” it said.
The claimed attack follows the Supreme Court receiving 8 petitions contesting the outcome of the 2022 Presidential Election.
The complaints accuse the IEBC, its Chairperson Wafula Chebukati, and other commissioners of electoral fraud, irregularities, and failing to uphold the constitution. They have been named as respondents in the cases.
The petitions also list William Ruto, who Chebukati declared to be the new president on August 15.
