IEBC Chair Wafula Chebukati Says They Have 7 Days To Declare Presidential Results

In an effort to quiet a restless population anxious to learn who would be Kenya’s fifth president, the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) claims that the law provides them seven days to announce the presidential results.
The results won’t be made public on Wednesday, according to IEBC Chairperson Wafula Chebukati, who made the announcement during a press conference on Wednesday.
“The issue of declaring results, that will not happen today. We have seven days to do that,” said Chebukati.
The law gives IEBC up to seven days from the date of elections to announce and declare the outcome but he assured that the electoral body is working hard to deliver the election results “in the shortest time frame.”
Chebukati: “As the national returning officer, I’m assuring you that we shall do everything to have this process concluded earliest possible.”
The IEBC chair also said that as of Wednesday at 2:30 p.m., 97.65 percent of Form 34As had been received.
From a total of 46,229 polling locations, 45,141 had submitted their forms, according to Chebukati.
Despite this, he pointed out that the forms are solely for presidential tallies and that the commission doesn’t have any actual forms because the submissions were made in picture form rather than real form.
“Results transmission of the forms from polling stations is ongoing and we will address you as we receive more,” he said.
Chebukati went on to affirm that the commission is upholding transparency and that all numbers recorded in the forms are the ones to be used in announcing the Presidential winner.
“We assure Kenyans that there are no other results other than the ones we have on the portal,” he added.
