I Was Bullied For Being Pregnant On TV, Janet Mbugua Opens Up
Janet Mbugua, a media personality, has spoken out about being a victim of cyberbullying while working as a news anchor.
Janet was speaking at an Aljazeera documentary called ‘Witness Documentary.’ Janet was interviewed and admitted that she was trolled when she anchor Citizen TV news while pregnant with her firstborn son.
“As a news anchor, reporter, presenter, as a woman, first of all, just that on its own, there is always something that will come at you,” she explained.
Janet explained that some people were offended by her reading the news while pregnant and even sent her derogatory messages.
“Every day, it was hateful, spiteful messages saying you are too pregnant to be on TV or we can’t stand looking at you while you are reading the news like that. I think it had happened before me, just that I was on a widely watched TV in the region.”
Janet discusses the importance of online safe spaces in the documentary. Activist Boniface Mwangi also stated that he was constantly bullied for raising people’s concerns on social media.
“I am bullied for highlighting people’s issues on social media. Some say I complained too much yet they are not my problems,” he said.
“I take a nice picture of myself and I share and people hate on me about that.”
Other celebrities who have spoken out about cyberbullying include Kamene Goro, Mulamwah, and Flaqo.
Flaqo claimed he was targeted by trolls after sharing a funny clip on his Twitter handle that a certain section did not find amusing.
He downplayed the negativity, claiming that it is only spread by a small group of 20 “keyboard warriors” who also own ten bogus Twitter accounts.
“Roast za Twitter sikuizi hazinijalishi, nimezoea, ni 20 keyboard warriors with 10 pseudos each upset that izo trolls hazipeleki taliban chini tangu waanze,” he said.
Later this year, the comedian discussed her struggles with mental health as a result of social media pressure and trolls.
