“I Also Want To Know What Happened To The Youngman” Didmus Barasa Claims He Is Innocent
Didmus Barasa, the newly elected MP for Kimilili, has reportedly hinted that he is not guilty of the suspected shooting and death of Brian Khaemba’s aide.
Speaking to reporters after turning himself in to Bungoma police on Friday, Barasa denied claims that he purposefully opened fire and murdered Brian Olunga in cold blood, stating that even to him, the details of the incident’s day were hazy.
Barasa, who is said to have fled the scene of the shooting, also discussed why it took him so long to surrender to police, revealing that he had traveled to Nairobi in order to apply for anticipatory bail from the High Court before to his arrest.
“When I saw on TV our regional police commander asking me to surrender, I drove all the way from Nairobi to this place and I am ready to cooperate with the police so that I can also know what killed that young man,” he said.
The MP continued by asserting that there were other gun owners present during the shooting on August 9.
The legislator claims that several other individuals, including the police, had weapons in their possession. He now wants all of these individuals to turn over their firearms so that they can be exposed to forensic examination.
“On that voting day there were other people with guns as well including my competitor and the police officer who was manning that polling station. We will be making applications that all those firearms be subjected to a forensic analysis for investigations,” he said.
According to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP), Barasa will be held at the Bungoma Police Station pending arraignment in court on Monday.
“Hon. Didmus Barasa, MP Kimilili, will spend the weekend at the Bungoma Police Station as ODPP deferred charges against him, to allow the Homicide detectives complete investigations. He will be presented in court on Monday, 15th Aug. 2022,” the ODPP said in a statement.
While Barasa and four other men followed Khaemba as he made his way to his car, Barasa gave the order to the guys to prevent Khaemba from leaving.
Olunga was shot and killed by the legislator as he was being taken to the hospital when Khaemba’s driver disobeyed Barasa’s orders and started his car.
