Here Is Why Your Ballot Paper May Be Rejected During The Tallying Process
There are just 12 hours left before Kenyans walk to the polls to choose their new representatives, including the 5th President of the Republic of Kenya.
IEBC Chairperson Wafula Chebukati conducted a simulation exercise on Sunday to demonstrate to voters how they will vote on Tuesday, August 9.
A voter will be recognized biometrically using the KIEMS kit at the polling place, and in cases where their finger prints do not accurately reflect who they are, a photo will be taken using the equipment for facial identification on the IEBC system if their finger prints do not. Additionally, voters will be identified using a manual voter register.
They will then receive six ballots to cast in the elections for President, Governor, Senator, Member of Parliament, Woman Representative, and County Assembly Member.
Voters have been informed by the commission that not all ballots will be accepted as valid votes.
During the counting process, some votes will be disregarded, while others will be deemed erroneous or challenged.
A ballot paper will be disregarded, in accordance with the IEBC, if
1. The voter marked more than one candidate
2. It has not been marked in favour of any candidate
3. It bears a serial number that doesn’t fall within those issued in that polling station
4. The ballot paper does not bear the security features as given by IEBC
5. it has been marked in such a manner that the identity of the voter is obvious or known
The IEBC will stamp a ballot paper to indicate that it has been disqualified during the tallying process.
The IEBC will write indelible ink on a voter’s tiny finger to indicate they have previously cast their ballots in an effort to reduce the likelihood of someone voting twice.
Voters who are also intended to help People Living With Disabilities will also cast their ballots and mark them together.
Their fingers will then be marked, with the guide having two markings to indicate that they not only voted but also helped another voter to cast a ballot.
