Election Drama As Sonko And Joho Clash In Mombasa County
Sonko allegedly met Hassan Joho and Abdulswamad Shariff Nassir, the ODM candidate running for governor of Mombasa, after he had just arrived at the Marycliff Primary School polling place from Makupa Police Station, according to the report. This is what allegedly caused the dramatic scenario.
However, after responding quickly to the disturbance and firing in the air to disperse a dozen supporters of the opposing camps who were storming at one another, the police officers escorted Sonko away to his vehicle.
Being taken away while speaking to a reporter Sonko asserted that the members of Azimio La Umoja intended to rig the results of the election.
“Wanataka kuiba kura…vitisho iliisha. Wametoka ndio tumetoka, walikuwa wanasema tutoke wabaki peke yao, hatutatishwa tena,”said Sonko.
Earlier, the former Nairobi governor traveled to the Makupa police station to free Omar Shallo, a United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party candidate for Mvita MP, and Samir Bhalo, who was also detained on suspicion of plotting to sabotage the poll at Tudor Village Hall.
Sonko left the Azimio coalition for the Kenya Kwanza alliance at the end of July, admitting that he had been promised a lucrative agreement that included seven high-ranking positions.
“Time is not on our side and I have had to sit down as a leader, think about what would be best for my people and I have come to the realisation that I should work with a government that shares the same vision for my people as I and one that benefits them.
“If you’re with me na mnipe baraka zenu then I will be signing this agreement in the next 2 hours. Niende nisiende?,” Sonko posted moments before he crossed over to Kenya Kwanza.
