Education CS, Magoha Wants The Teachers Who Assulted A Pupil For Not Scoring 400 Marks Fired
George Magoha, the cabinet secretary for education, has denounced the attack on a class 8 student at Nyamninia Primary School for not earning 400 points on a school assessment test.
The CS advised that the teacher who was later arrested should be fired because it is against the law to use corporal punishment.
“It is totally against the law to apply any stick on a child as the law currently stands, my personal opinion notwithstanding. It is savage to cane a child like you are caning an animal,” CS Magoha said.
“Anybody who did some teaching and pedagogy at any level should know that if the child has performed well and you want them to do better, caning will not improve, it will just inspire some rebellion from the child.”
The CS requested that the Teacher Service Commission accelerate the investigation and promptly remove the teacher whose activities have not only caused a commotion among Kenyans but also a hassle for students and their parents during his tour of Siaya county.
“For those teachers irrespective of their number, I think the TSC will deal with them but you as NGAO has work to do to ensure they face the full force of the law. Every child in Kenya matters,” he said.
After visiting the CBC class at Wagwer Mixed Secondary School, Magoha spoke to the media and reaffirmed that corporal punishment is illegal and should be avoided at all circumstances.
“You must not touch the child, call the parents of the child let them come and take the child home and we start from there,” he advised.
“If I as the cabinet secretary cannot cane a child, who do you think you are as an ordinary teacher to cane someone’s child like that? And for no reason at all, just that you want the child to score more than 400.”
According to reports, Bravin Ochido, a student in class 8, received a spanking on Wednesday of this week for failing to get 400 points on an internal exam. He suffered injuries to his back and legs as a result of the assault, and once the incident and his accusations were captured on camera, authorities took action.
