Didmus Barasa Retains The Kimilili MP Seat Despite Being On The Run
Didmus Barasa has been named the victor of the 2022 Kimilili MP contest by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).
IEBC reports that Barasa won the election with 26,861 votes, defeating Brian Khaemba of the Democratic Action Party of Kenya (DAP-K), who only managed to get 9,497 votes.
The troubled lawmaker’s victory comes the day after he is accused of killing Brian Olunga, who has since been identified as Khaemba’s bodyguard.
According to a police complaint, on August 9 at around 6 o’clock Khaemba reportedly went to the Chebukwabi polling place to watch the counting of ballots.
However, he ran into Barasa at the polling place, and the two quickly got into a fight, which forced Khaemba to leave the polling place.
While Barasa and four other men followed Khaemba as he made his way to his car, Barasa gave the order to the guys to prevent Khaemba from leaving.
However, it’s said that Khaemba’s driver disobeyed Barasa’s request and lit the car, which prompted the lawmaker to shoot Olunga in the forehead.
He passed away from his wounds while being transported to the hospital.
Soon after, a manhunt was started to find Barasa, who fled the area before police arrived and has apparently been missing ever since.
As a result of Barasa’s involvement in the event, Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Noordin Haji has since ordered his arrest. Rumors concerning the MP-whereabouts elect’s have included the possibility that he may have fled to a neighboring nation.
