Details Of The Job President Ruto Appointed His Former Boss Uhuru Kenyatta During Inauguration Ceremony
Uhuru Kenyatta, the former head of state, continues to preside over regional peace talks on behalf of the Kenyan government as William Samoei Ruto, the newly sworn-in president of Kenya, appoints him as his peace envoy for the Great Lakes Region and the Horn of Africa.
President Kenyatta participated actively in peace negotiations in Ethiopia, South Sudan, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Somalia throughout his term in office; President Ruto plans to carry on these efforts.
Soon after Uhuru handed over the reins of power, Ruto made the news during his inaugural speech at Kasarani Stadium in Nairobi.
“I have asked my elder brother Uhuru Kenyatta who has done a commendable job in those regions, and he has graciously agreed to continue chairing those discussions on behalf of the people of Kenya,” Ruto said as he appointed his predecessor to the position.
He added: “I have committed that the government of Kenya will support those initiatives that will be chaired by Uhuru Kenyatta and I want to thank you Excellency for graciously agreeing to support us and help me in those interventions.”
In addition to praising his predecessors’ diplomatic efforts and efforts to advance peace, security, and stability in the region, President Ruto promised to fully support his peace intervention efforts amid war tensions in the vast East African region, adding that Kenya will continue to play a crucial role in bilateral and multilateral diplomacy.
As chair of the African Union Peace and Security Council, the permanent decision-making body of the continental organization for the prevention, management, and settlement of conflicts in Africa, Kenya mediated a number of peace talks in the area during the Kenyatta administration.
Since January 2021, Kenya has served as Africa’s representative on the UN Security Council. Kenya will hold this position until 2023, when Mozambique will take over.
