Detailed Conversation Between President Uhuru And US Secretary Of State Anthony Blinken
Following the conclusion of his three-nation trip to Africa, President Uhuru Kenyatta spoke with U.S. Secretary of State Anthony Blinken by phone call on Friday.
Blinken arrived in South Africa on August 7 to begin his journey, during which he would also stop in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and Rwanda. His goal was to fight the spread of Russian influence across the continent and to advance regional peace and security.
Blinken’s visit came after Sergei Lavrov, the foreign minister of Russia, visited Africa in July.
Blinken praised President Kenyatta for his efforts to promote peace and security on the continent, according to reports.
Blinken, in the call, noted that President Kenyatta’s efforts will go a long way in mediating conflicts and supporting regional economic development across Africa.
“Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken spoke today with Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta to discuss the Secretary’s recent visit to South Africa, the DRC, and Rwanda, noting his appreciation for President Kenyatta’s continued efforts to advance regional peace and security,” the U.S. Department of State said in a statement.
Blinken also asked Kenyans to uphold peace and patience as the vote-counting process goes on, noting that the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has yet to declare the victor of the 2022 presidential race.
“Discussed with President Uhuru Kenyatta the importance of Kenya’s elections as a model for the continent. We encourage peace and patience as the vote tallying continues from the August 9 elections,” Blinken said on his verified Twitter account on Saturday.
Last week, while on a tour of South Africa, Blinken highlighted that all eyes will be on Kenya’s general election on August 9; he predicted that it would proceed calmly, openly, and fairly.
