DCI To Launch Manhunt In 6hrs If Didmus Barasa Does Not Surrender
Embattled Following the alleged murder of his opponent’s bodyguard, Kimilili Member of Parliament Didmis Barasa has been given six hours to turn himself in to the police.
For the alleged murder of Brian Olunga, whom he is accused of shooting dead on Tuesday, August 8, in Chebukwabi in Kimilili, Bungoma county, Barasa—who has since fled—is wanted.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigation (DCI) cautioned the MP in a statement on Thursday that failing to comply would put him and the person harboring him in serious trouble.
“The Directorate of Criminal Investigations is warning Hon Didmus Barasa, who has since gone into hiding after the brutal murder of one, to surrender to the nearest police station within the next 6-hours,” wrote DCI.
DCI further noted that a manhunt has been launched for the MP in bid to bring him to book.
“A specialised team of sleuths based from the elite Crime Research & Intelligence Bureau and the Homicide department has been dispatched to augment the teams on the ground for his manhunt.”
According to a police report obtained by Citizen Digital, Barasa is accused of killing Brian Khaemba’s bodyguard, a member of the Democratic Action Party of Kenya (DAP-K).
On a Democratic Action Party of Kenya (DAP-K) ticket, Mr. Khaemba was running against Barasa for the Kimilili MP seat. It is alleged that he went to the Chebukwabi polling place at around 6 o’clock to see the ballots being counted.
However, he ran across the incumbent lawmaker at the voting location and opted to depart shortly after arriving.
Mr Khaemba headed towards his car but “Didmus Barasa followed him in the company of four men and ordered them not to allow him (Mr Brian Khaemba) to leave…” read part of the report.
Joshua Nasokho, the prospective MP’s driver, is alleged to have disobeyed Barasa’s request and started the car.
“Didmus Barasa withdrew a pistol and aimed at Mr Khaemba’s aide namely Brian Olunga and shot him on the forehead where he profusely bled,” read the police report.
Following the event, DAP-K leaders have demanded Barasa’s arrest, with Eugene Wamalwa, the Defence Cabinet Secretary, leading the charge.
