DCI Exposes How Venezuelans Accessed IEBC Data Remotely, Edit, Delete Or Manipulate
Investigators from Kenya’s Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have issued a statement outlining the proof they have obtained from three Venezuelan nationals accused of meddling in the country’s presidential elections.
At the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA), Joel Garcia, Jose Castellano, and Salvador Javier Suarez were detained on July 21, 2022.
Raila Odinga and Martha Karua had petitioned the Supreme Court of Kenya, and DCI responded with a statement on Friday, August 26, confirming that the group had access to crucial election documents such the KIEMS kit and IEBC personnel passwords.
The DCI affirmed in its affidavit that Castellano had access to a level where he could use the system and change data if he so desired. This data has grown to be very important in the Supreme Court lawsuit contesting the election of William Ruto as president-elect.
“It was established that the confiscated exhibits had substantial information held in the IEBC systems are in full control of foreign employees of M/S Smartmatic International Holdings B.V. and Seamless Limited who have been contracted by IEBC.
“Castellano was in a position to remotely access the entire IEBC data and has the capacity to add, delete, edit or manipulate in any manner the entire IEBC system,” the report detailed.
The DCI claims that two Kenyan employees at the commission had access to the system, which was also accessible to 19 other people.
The DCI suggested that an audit of the IEBC system be performed to determine whether there had been any penetration.
The Azimio la Umoja coalition, led by Raila Odinga, has asserted that Kenya Kwanza and IEBC employees conspired to rig the presidential election in William Ruto’s favor.
According to an affidavit submitted by IEBC Commissioner Justus Nyang’aya, foreigners intercepted and altered Forms 34A delivered to IEBC servers.
