Court Confirms Ksh.900M Fine For Fraud
The Kenyan High Court has upheld the conviction of Mukuria Ngamau, a businessman who was fined KSH. 900 million in 2022 after being found guilty of stealing KSH. 180 million from the Young Business Development Fund.
He was sentenced to 27 years in prison or a fine for the crime committed in Nairobi between November 17, 2014, and May 4, 2015.
He appealed the conviction and punishment, claiming that the magistrate court failed to properly assess the evidence and made an incorrect conclusion.
The High Court upheld his conviction, citing convincing evidence that Mr Ngamau received the money through his trading company, Quorandum Ltd, without performing any services and after fabricating contract documents to provide ICT consultant services.
The court also ordered him to return the KSH. 180M that had been improperly paid to his firm.
Mr. Ngamau was charged alongside former Youth Fund CEO Catherine Namuye and Chairman Bruce Odhiambo, but both died while the case was still being heard in court.
