Bahati Claims To Have Spent 33M In Campaigning For Mathare Seat
Bahati claimed in an interview with Plug TV that raising money for a campaign was a difficult task and that the cost of competing for a parliamentary seat may reach Sh50 million.
The musician said that he had spent Sh33 million on his campaign and that he would be spending even more on election day.
“For my campaign I spent Sh33 million; this is I got from my friends, my fans and my party Jubilee has been very supportive as well. The budget for the election day is Sh10 million,” Bahati said not revealing precisely what the intended to do with the money during the elections.
Azimio Raila Odinga, one of the Kenyan presidential candidates, persuaded the musician to abandon his political campaign in favor of Anthony Oluoch, who is running under the banner of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), but Bahati rejected the suggestion.
The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) published a gazette notice informing the public that 13 candidates from various political parties are running in the Mathare constituency.
Bahati traveled the district for his final rally, pleading with voters to support him in the general election.
The ODM secretary general Edwin Sifuna and Rachael Shebesh claimed that the singer had abandoned his campaign in favor of Anthony Oluoch, which led to the artist being obliged to clarify that he had not withdrawn from the contest in June.
Bahati accused the two of spreading propaganda, asking them to refrain from mentioning his name.
He added that no amount of intimidation and falsehood will make him drop his Mathare bid.
“You want us to elect you as the next senator and you are spreading Propaganda everywhere. If you have been given money by the incumbent, just endorse him but don’t mention my name,” Bahati ranted.
