Amason Kingi Elected Senate Speaker As Azimio Senators Decide Not To Take Part In The Elections
Amason Kingi, a former governor of Kilifi, has been chosen to serve as the Senate’s news speaker.
Since the 2010 Constitution’s enactment, Kingi will be the third person to hold the position.
He will succeed Bungoma Governor Ken Lusaka, who was chosen on August 9, 2022.
After receiving 46 votes, Kingi was declared the winner. According to NTV, at least 10 Azimio senators supported Kenya Kwanza.
This is true even though certain senators from Azimio boycotted the vote for a variety of reasons.
After Senator Moses Kajwang requested the suspension of the speaker election, the Azimio senators criticized the clerk for failing to decide in their favor.
Senator Kajwang contended that because the 20 nominated Senators’ names had only been published 48 hours prior, they had no time to submit applications to run for the slots.
“We cannot proceed with the election for speaker and deputy speaker until the rights of nominated members of the senate have been respected and are accorded an opportunity to put in their application,” Kajwang’ stated.
Senator Ledama Olekina of Narok joined him in claiming that the rights of senators who have been nominated for office will be violated by the election of the Senate speaker and deputy speakers.
“We talk about inclusivity and diversity and this house, being a house of union, must lead by example. I would like to beseech you to suspend this matter until the time when everyone will be given an opportunity to present their papers,” the Narok senator said.
However, pro-William Ruto senators asked the Senate clerk to refrain from calling off the election.
The clerk declared that he would not halt the meeting and further stated that the Standing Orders covered the matter at hand.
The Standing Orders state that the swearing-in of new members of the house comes first after an election.
The Senators then choose a new speaker after all the members have taken the oath of office.
Azimio senators decided not to take part in the election, which improved Amasong Kingi’s chances of winning for Kenya Kwanza.
Legislators who opted out of the election also highlighted problems with some of the candidates’ integrity.
