AL QAEDA Leader, Ayman Al-Zawahiri Killed By The US
The United States has confirmed that the late Osama Bin Laden’s successor and Al-Qaeda leader, Ayman al-Zawahiri, was killed.
In an address on Tuesday, US President Joe Biden said that Zawahiri had been killed in a drone attack in Kabul, Afghanistan.
“I authorized a precision strike that would remove him from the battlefield, once and for all,” Biden.
Following a meeting with security advisers, the US president ordered the drone strike on Saturday.
Zawahiri, an Egyptian surgeon who attained notoriety as one of the world’s most wanted terrorists, was identified as the primary architect of the September 11, 2001 attacks on the US, which claimed the lives of over 3,000 people.
After the terror group’s founder, Bin Laden, was assassinated in a raid in 2011, he assumed control of the organization.
The US government had established a Sh2,965,750,000 ($25 million) reward for his apprehension; however, indications indicate that Zawahiri was safe with the Taliban, who had taken control of Afghanistan.
“Now, justice has been delivered and this terrorist leader is no more. People around the world no longer need to fear the vicious and determined killer.
“The United States continues to demonstrate our resolve and our capacity to defend the American people against those who seek to do us harm. We make it clear again tonight, that no matter how long it takes, no matter where you hide, if you are a threat to our people, the United States will find you and take you out,” President Biden said.
Before taking over following Osama’s death, the head of Al-Qaeda was Osama’s personal physician.
Zawahiri’s position was tracked by US agents earlier this year, and they kept tabs on him while he traveled to Kabul to see his family.
The assault occurs a year after Biden issued the directive to withdraw US troops from Afghanistan, which allowed the Taliban to seize control of the country fast.
