AAEA Praises Kenyans For Political Calmness And IEBC For Being Prepared Well
The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has received praise from the Association of African Election Authorities (AAEA) for the recently completed general election, describing it as satisfactory.
The association, which had sent a solidarity mission to the nation to monitor the election at Wafula Chebukati’s invitation, said in a statement on Tuesday that the elections on August 9 were peaceful and inclusive.
According to the team, in accordance with the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the international covenant on civil and political rights, the electoral body demonstrated readiness, effective communication, and inclusivity for all Kenyans.
“The AAEA finds the mechanism put in place for the visually impaired, Persons with Disability and lactating mothers conducive to inclusive voting in line with article 21 of the Declaration of Human Rights and article 25 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights,” said the observer group.
They further lauded Kenyans for exhibiting political maturity and maintaining peace throughout the campaign, election and vote tallying process.
“The AAEA Solidarity Mission takes this opportunity to commend the people of Kenya, the IEBC, all political actors and civil society for the political maturity demonstrated throughout the entire electoral process.
“We, members of the AREA, found the organisation and conduct of the polls quite satisfactory. The August 9 2022 Elections gave Kenyans a legitimate opportunity to freely choose their leaders,” the team concluded.
Following a decision by the AAEA Executive Committee to send a solidarity trip to Kenya at its meeting in May in Accra, Ghana, Mr. Chebukati extended an invitation to the country.
The 45-member association brings together the leaders of the continent’s election administration organizations to discuss the conduct of free and fair elections in their various nations.
In the Kenyan elections, Dr. Chifundo Kachale, Chairperson of Malawi’s Electoral Commission (MEC), served as the AAEA’s regional representative for Southern Africa.
