Chinese Call For A Non Discriminatory Environment At A Time Of China Square Stand Off
The Chinese Foreign Ministry’s Director-General of African Affairs, Wu Peng, has called for a “non-arbitrary and non-discriminatory investment environment” amid a dispute between Kenyan traders and Chinese investors who have built up the China Square market in Nairobi.
China Square, located on Kenyatta University’s UniCity Mall, is a one-stop shopping hub along Thika Road that has sparked interest because it stocks a broad variety of products under one roof and at comparatively low prices, attracting customers to its alleys.
Local traders have complained that the centre is crippling their companies, prompting Trade Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria to condemn it.
Kuria stated that Chinese investors are welcome in Kenya, “but as manufacturers, not traders,” and that the location of the shopping center should be given to local traders.
Foreign Affairs Principal Secretary Korir Sing’Oei chimed in, stating that no investor, regardless of nationality, should be concerned because of Kenya’s non-arbitrary and non-discriminatory investment regime.
