Fuel Prices Still The Same For The Second Month Now
For the second consecutive month, Kenya’s fuel prices won’t change as the government reduces its fuel subsidy to maintain the existing levels.
The government subsidy, according to the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA), has helped Kenyans save some money at the pump. On Sunday, EPRA stated that fuel prices will stay the same for the upcoming month.
Without the subsidy, Kenyans would be paying Ksh. 214.03 a liter in Nairobi as opposed to the current Ksh. 159.12, a Ksh.54.91 difference, according to EPRA Director General Daniel Kiptoo.
“The applicable pump prices for this cycle have been maintained as the ones applicable in the immediate previous cycle. The government will utilize the Petroleum Development Levy to cushion consumers from the otherwise high prices,” said Mr. Kiptoo.
In July, fuel prices went unchanged for the first time in five months as the government allocated a further Ksh.16.7 billion to the fuel stabilization mechanism.
“It is notified that his Excellency the President has today authorized an additional fuel subsidy of Ksh.16.7 billion so as to cushion Kenyans from a further increase in fuel prices. With today’s presidential action, diesel will continue to retail at Ksh.140, petrol at Ksh.159.12 and kerosene at Ksh.127.94,” stated State House Spokesperson Kanze Dena Mararo.
