Bungoma’s Outgoing Governor Accepts Defeat In MP Race
Sospeter Ojaamong, the outgoing governor of Busia, failed in his attempt to win a seat in the House of Representatives for Teso South.
Geoffrey Omuse, the incumbent and independent candidate, and Mary Emase, a member of the United Democratic Alliance (UDA), accepted Ojamong’s early defeat.
The two-term governor, who has been in office since 2013, expressed his gratitude to the Busia community and to his family for their support both throughout his tenure as governor and during his campaigns for the Teso South parliamentary seat.
“The elections are over, but our principles will endure for generations. To my family, friends, team, and campaigners thank you for the unwavering support during my reign and campaign period,” said Ojamong.
A governor may hold office for a maximum of two terms, and governor Ojamong was one of the county heads who was considering other positions after serving their final tenure.
Among those running for seats is the departing governor of Makueni County, Kivutha Kibwana, who wants to represent the county in the senate.
As the counting of votes reaches its pinnacle, candidates all throughout the nation have started to admit defeat.
In the contest to succeed Alfred Mutua as governor of Machakos county, the former State House chief of staff Nzioka Waita has conceded defeat to Wiper Party candidate Wavinya Ndeti.
Wafula Chebukati, the chairperson of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), has advised candidates who have conducted their own tallying or who have received the results of the elections to acknowledge defeat.
“Results for member of national assembly, member of county assembly are declared at the constituency and I want to believe the people conceding have already received the results. This is a transparent process once you have your results form and you know what have garner then you are able to concede, that is the way to go,” Chebukati said.
Chebukati added that the commission was making every effort to finish the election as quickly as possible so that the victors could be announced.
