400 Workers Laid Off As Keroche Breweries Close Down Due To Tax Arrears
Keroche Breweries, Kenya’s troubled local brewer, is set to lay off 400 workers today, June 20th 2022, as it fights its recent closure by the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) for tax arrears.
In a press cofrence, Tabitha Karanja, the brewer CEO said, “The company is at the verge of laying off over 400 employees due to the illegal, punitive and draconian actions by the KRA. The Ministry of Labour, Social Security and Services ought to be concerned and interrogate the matter as it is constitutionally mandated to safeguard the welfare of labour and legally obligated to protect all Kenyan workers.”

Last week, she announced that the IRS had issued agency notices to several banks against lending to the brewer, effectively paralyzing the company’s operations.
“The KRA measures of issuing the agency notices to all the banks in Kenya, have induced a harsh investment climate. Some banks with whom we were arranging financing are finding it difficult because frequent closures are raising risk levels,” added Tabitha
