2022 Presidential Election; I Had Opportunities To Steal But I Did Not, David Mwaure Waihiga Says
David Mwaure, the presidential candidate for the Agano Party, has rejected claims that he shares traits with other corrupt politicians running for office in the August elections.
Mwaure noted that he has lived his life based on strong Christian values and teachings, supplemented by ethics that govern his legal practice, and as such he is a cut above his rivals and other aspirant statesmen. Mwaure was speaking on Tuesday at the Presidential Debate held at the Catholic University of East Africa (CUEA).
Ken Mijungu, the moderator, questioned Mwaure about whether his inability to win an elective seat despite numerous attempts was the reason that his name had not been connected to graft. Mwaure laughed off the accusations, pointing out that he had held high-ranking positions in the clergy and several corporations where he could have dubious wealthed himself, but that was not in his character.
“It’s not that I have not had an opportunity; i have not been appointed at the top. As a lawyer I can confidently state that I have not been accused of stealing client’s money,” said Mwaure.
“It is not that I have held these positions of responsibility before. I have sat in the council of the Law Society of Kenya, several corporates, NGOs and religious boards so it (being graft free) is a lifestyle.”
The leader of the Agano Party, Mwaure, plans to boost the revenue allocation to counties to 40% and allot 10% of the allocation to Village councils should he and his running mate, Ruth Mutua, win the election.
In addition, Mwaure wants to form a task team to investigate the possibility of dissolving Nairobi County after the elections in August so that the governor of Nairobi can be appointed by the president and become a cabinet member automatically starting in 2027.
Mwaure promised a broad waiver of 50% PAYE in his plan for Kenyan workers, as well as a favorable environment for the private sector, people, and other businesses in an effort to encourage entrepreneurship.
