2022 Presidential Debate; David Waihiga Promises To Cut Off Diplomatic Ties With Countries Holding Kenya’s Money Once Elected President
David Mwaure Waihiga, the presidential candidate for the Agano Party, has just declared that if he wins the elections in August, he will sever diplomatic ties with any nations that possess assets belonging to Kenya.
Mwaure said that around Ksh. 15 trillion had been secreted outside the country in the form of investments by people, which had driven the nation into debt, during the presidential debate at the Catholic University of Eastern Africa.
In light of the fact that these nations are utilizing Kenya’s riches to expand their economies, Waihiga swore that his administration will hold these nations accountable.
“In the budget of 2017-2018, Treasury Cabinet Secretary Henry Rotich said to us that about Ksh.14.6 trillion, which was rounded up to Ksh.15 trillion was stashed abroad and needed to be brought back, to date, that money has never been brought back and we have never had a report,” said Waihiga.
“If a country is holding our money and knows that it is supposed to be Euro Bond money or money from SGR, what else are we talking about international cooperation, relationships… how can you refer to a person, in this case, such a nation as your friend?”
The presidential hopeful went on to defend his move saying that the hard-line position would prevent future investors from looting from the country and investing abroad.
“Our biggest threat to our economy is because we steal, we scatter away and siphon money that is supposed to go to our Agriculture, skill building and the health of our people,” he explained.
“In my consideration, we have not less than Ksh.20 trillion outside the country that can be brought back and if it is brought back, the country will be turned upside down.”
In response to the question of whether or not his decision would cause an economic catastrophe in the nation, Waihiga stated that any country, regardless of its interests in Kenya, that was eager to expand its economy using money that had been stolen, was an enemy of Kenya.
“Imagine you are a nation called Smriti holding Ksh. 10 trillion that is supposed to be Kenyan money and you know it. What then can we talk about human rights?” Waihiga posed.
